For English speakers, it is well known the struggle of a four year old learning to read at primary school: “ There was a big choir in the church that evening…”, wait a minute there was a big “ kooir”, “tʃoir” “kwair”??? Ahhhh…

And imagine the dilemma of an English student when he encounters words such as Worcestershire or that, while on holidays, he can’t find his way to Leicester Square… I really hope he doesn’t have to ask for directions!

In Spanish, you will never encounter this type of problems as it is written the same way as it is pronounced, although English speakers might find the”rr” hard to pronounce!!

How to Introduce Yourself to Your New Pal

You have downloaded the Hello Pal app, you have found a suitable new pal and now, you are just about to press the recording button… but, you have forgotten about the most important part!

How would you introduce yourself to your new friend?

There are several ways you can use to introduce yourself in Spanish, depending on the degree of formality you would like to use, and in Spain, we are very formal.

We use usted if we are addressing a person who we don’t know or an elderly person; however, with the younger generations, friends or family, we tend to be more informal and use tú.

As I have mentioned in previous articles, usted and tú are the equivalent to the English “you”.

Now, let’s make a start! It is really up to you how formal you want to be with your new pal but for this example, I will be less formal.

These are some handy phrases you could use:

  • Buenos días/ tardes/ noches > Good morning/ afternoon/ evening
  • ¿Cómo estás? > How are you?
  • Bien, gracias > Fine, thanks
  • ¿Y tú? > And you?
  • Me llamo… > My name is…
  • ¿Cómo te llamas? > What is your name?
  • ¿Perdón? > Excuse me?
  • Mucho gusto > Please to meet you
  • Adiós > Goodbye

Now, it’s your turn, how would you introduce yourself to your new pal?
